چکیده

Smoothing of biomedical images should preserve gray-level transitions between adjacent tissues, while restoring contours consistent with anatomical structures. Anisotropic diffusion operators are based on image appearance discontinuities (either local or contextual) and might fail at weak inter-tissue transitions. Meanwhile, the output of block-wise and morphological operations is prone to present a block structure due to the shape and size of the considered pixel neighborhood. In this contribution, we use differential geometry concepts to define a diffusion operator that restricts to image consistent level-sets. In this manner, the final state is a non-uniform intensity image presenting homogeneous inter-tissue transitions along anatomical structures, while smoothing intrastructure texture. Experiments on different types of medical images (magnetic resonance, computerized tomography) illustrate its benefit on a further process (such as segmentation) of images. & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Speckle Noise Reduction for the Enhancement of Retinal Layers in Optical Coherence Tomography Images

Introduction One of the most important pre-processing steps in optical coherence tomography (OCT) is reducing speckle noise, resulting from multiple scattering of tissues, which degrades the quality of OCT images. Materials and Methods The present study focused on speckle noise reduction and edge detection techniques. Statistical filters with different masks and noise variances were applied on ...

Structure-oriented bilateral filtering of seismic images

Bilateral filtering is widely used to enhance photographic images, but in most implementations is poorly suited to seismic images. A bilateral filter consists of two (domain and range) filter kernels. By replacing the domain kernel with a smoothing filter that conforms to image structures, we obtain a bilateral filter suitable for seismic image processing. Examples and comparison with conventio...

Enhanced Directional Smoothing Algorithm for Edge-Preserving Smoothing of Synthetic-Aperture Radar Images

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are subject to prominent speckle noise, which is generally considered a purely multiplicative noise process. In theory, this multiplicative noise is that the ratio of the standard deviation to the signal value, the “coefficient of variation,” is theoretically constant at every point in a SAR image. Most of the filters for speckle reduction are based on this...

Anisotropic vector diffusion in image smoothing

Anisotropic diffusion has been widely used in image processing for its efficiency of smoothing the noisy images while preserving the sharp edges. In this paper we will explore a general version of anisotropic diffusion schemes for vectorvalued images, based on the polar-coordinate representation of the vectors. As an example, we will apply our method to color images and show its ability of edge...
